IF: enough

The paper Emily was given to color on just wasn't big enough!

I never know if I'll have time to re-work or color my IF illustrations by the end of the week, thus the B&W sketches. I am very happy with this sketch, though the composition could be better (i know, too much space at the top right).

Anyway, in my efforts to get a portfolio started, I would like to clean and color this one. Any and all suggestions welcome!

Tom, This is going to look great in color. I don't think the space to the right is a bad thing...why? because sometimes spreads need room for text, right?

Hi Tom-- I like the composition with the space, and think color will enhance the piece even more. And sweet idea! The only thing I would tweak is the table... the rear legs should be showing to make it more 3- dimensional. Unless I'm mistaken and it's a two-legged table? ;-)

Wow Tom! This one is really fantastic. Love the perspective and the characters are really sweet. I like also that you don't see their faces, so it leaves their appearance up to your imagination.

I think all the above suggestions are great. I would only add, (and this is not important at all) but because they are both facing away from you, I might add a pet, or a mouse or something (making sure it doesn't fight with the main focus,) but I'd make the critter looking up at what she is doing. Maybe it's to her right, maybe under the table... or not. It's fabulous as is!

It really is a great composition and will certainly shine in color! I think it's fine as is, but if you want to give the wall less blank space, have her stand on a chair or loveseat to color up higher. Kids love climbing on things anyway, right? Great job!

Thanks Rui!

Linda and Cindy: Awesome ideas! I had an idea for adding a couch, but not in that way. And a critter facing the viewer is cool too! Thanks to you both!
("Critter" makes me think of Sandy from Spongebob!)

Tom,
I've always wondered how truly artistic children can ever pass up that HUGE unfinished canvas that a blank wall is!! I disagree about too much space in your illo.. I think that idea is what creates the image -that emptiness just waiting to be used!!
Nice!!

Thanks, Elise. Good point!

I really like this sketch (and it is so relatable my son colored all over our stairs and his bedroom walls), I love the peak into mom at the sink, oblivious to what awaits her. Love the details in the devoted bear and the pigtails. I agree about making the family portrait larger or adding a few more pictures. You could also add a big box of crayons beside her... an artist needs lots of tools at his/her disposal... although my son did A LOT of scribbling with just a blue marker. Can't wait to see the finish in color. =)

This is lovely! All you need to do is to bunch everything closer together, maybe giving some more space to the mum? Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the new coloured version! :)

What a great concept! The extra wall space is great for text, so need need to fill it!

Thanks for the nice comments! You asked if I used photoshop, and I did a little, but it is originally a painting layered on top of collaged newspaper. Once I scanned it in, I used the "poster edges" technique which enhances all of the text from the newspaper and gives it a textural quality.
