Inspired by music

©2008 Tom Barrett

I don't often listen to music when I create (either work or pleasure) as I find it too distracting at times. However, I think I have been listening to the wrong music. Through illustrator Corey Godbey's blog, I found this music. It is really beautiful and found it inspiring. So I pulled out my tablet and began sketching in Photoshop, with no direction, just letting the music lead me, and the above illustration came out. I let that same song (still playing as I write this) play over and over while I drew. What a great experience!

Not that the above is any great work of art, but it didn't matter. The whole experience was relaxing, calming and one of the best drawing times yet. I have ask Corey what that song is so I can find the CD, or more similar to it.

Happy creating!

wonderful, Tom! Your tree is beautiful and inspiring too. I can't work without music personally, it is very much part of painting for me.

Thanks as always for your comments on my blog Tom, and especially thanks for the award! I will be posting it soon.

This is just lovely, a great success you must do more like this. It's the rich orange colour that really appeals here :)

I'm always looking for new sounds/music when I work. I always need some background noise..and the music you discovered had a very inspiring tone indeed! Very soothing...and your tree reflects that too!

Thanks, Kim, Bee and Jannie!

Now, can anyone tell me what song it is? :P

Actually, this is gorgeous! Honestly Tom, it is the best illustration I have seen you do....maybe because it flowed so freely from your subconscious. I love it.

This is very beautiful. I can really see your eye as a photographer coming out here. I love listening to music when I'm creating, but it really does have to be the right music. Some music is just too distracting. The music you linked us to is gorgeous. I can see this inspiring something like your golden tree! Thanks!

Wow!!! How did I miss this one!!!!!!!!

This is it Tom!! This is you! Continue on this path... and yes music is extremly important. I can't work without listening to music, just can't.

After listening to the link you have there, I realized it reminds me of the background music they sometimes use in Brothers and Sisters. have you seen this show? I dont know why but I have a talent, if you can call it that, for recognizing background musics from movies and tv.. hahaha.. not very useful but well... what can I say? :o)
