Going digital...

©2008 Tom Barrett

Here is another one of my forays into digital illustration. Many of you may recognize this little tug from previous posts. This was done completely in Photoshop using some custom brushes (actually only one of them) from this guy. I am quite happy with this as it came out looking painted like I wanted it to. Those of you who use a tablet can attest, I'm sure, to the difficulty of going from pencil and paper to stylus and screen. I guess like anything, it is a medium that must be practiced (mostly hand/eye coordination, and getting used to not being able to turn the "paper" if needed). It is kind of funny to realize that even on screen, you have to layer colors to get the effect you want. What's neat about digital is how loose you can be with the art by not having to worry about making a permanent mark (mistake!) that will require starting over, compared to some traditional mediums I enjoy working with. If you haven't yet experimented with digital illustration, give it a try!

It looks good. Getting a traditional effect with digital is exciting. I've been working at that for while (I've created my own brushes--who knew people were selling them?) But it does take a different eye/hand skill set.

Thanks, Heather! It is very exciting, and I plan to experiment with my own brushes soon as well!

This looks good, Tom! I haven't tried digital yet, but boy, do I love the idea of the "undo" command! :-)

Wow! This looks sooo good! It really look painted. I've resisted using the tablet. Oddly, I use the mouse to paint. Why that's easier for me, I'll never know, heehee!

The little tug is adorable. Great job!

Ha! You really fooled me! If I really thought it was painted. Great job!

Tom,
You really inspire me! I wish I had the time to experiment more! It's rough enough sometimes just keeping up with things I have on my list of "to do's", let alone learn new things!! Good job!!
I have to mention here also, love your self portrait!
Thanks for visiting my art garden, and your comments. Our cat would prefer canned food, but nope! She's stuck with the dry kind.

This is so cool! It really does look like paint or oil pastel of black paper! Great job Tom.

Elise: I can relate to "to do's" and lack of time, etc. Most of my drawing time is at the expense of sleep (did the tug between 12am and 1am!), and the time during the day when the "day job" is slow.

Thanks Kate! It was a good experiment and I learned a lot about different layering in Photoshop to get the effect.

Elise: Our cats only get can food occasionally, thus Tiger's (the male) reaction.

It's always exciting to try something new. I'm taking a digital illustration class in September. Should be fun. You've got me pumped up for it. ha
