One week down, 2 to go, and I already see an improvement in my drawing! This has been the most fun. Thank you to everyone who has commented! Having you guys to do this with has been a real encouragement. I can't wait to see what the next 2 weeks bring.
I did some more faces and a few full characters (and a tomato, sun and moon for good measure!) One thing I discovered is I need to draw my characters larger. The top image shows faces and characters the way I usually draw them. The bottom image shows the two heads I did larger, about 10 times as large as I usually draw!! I think I had gotten in to the habit of trying to get the most drawings on one page, thus unknowingly forcing myself to draw smaller. Anyway, I am excited about the last two drawings, and will draw larger from now on.

Yes, sketch smaller. That is the key. I find it is much easier to work with proportions if you keep it small. You can always scan it afterwards and make it the size you want. My sketches are always small.
Great expressions on the two on the bottom Tom. I like the tomato too. I know what you mean about working small, I got a smaller sketch book to carry inconspicuously at my new day job, and noticed I've been drawing many tiny little people as a result.
He, he.. I just read your post again and realized you were saying the exact opposite as to what I thought you said... sorry my head is all cloudy as I type and my understanding seems to be off.
It's good then that you found a better way working larger. For me is the exact opposite. I doodle and sketch small and then scan and make it bigger in order to work. I find it a lot easier and natural this way.
The important thing is that you found a great way for you :o)
Wow, I noticed you can get a lot of expression in your larger drawings! More detail too! These are great! I like the yelling guy cuz that's what I felt like doing today. Hehe. Very nice!
Thanks Ryan, Alicia and Joan. Drawing larger gives me more room to play around with the features, and I have more control over the shape of the head. We'll see how that works with full characters in the future!

i love your characters. i like the girl licking her lip. my 2 year old makes that exact expression. very cute. and i love the tomato. I have a very hard time giving inanimate objects a personality. good job. it does, however make me hungry for a tomato sandwich.
More great sketches! The large boy seems like it's the most 'structured' face and head of the group. I also like the boy playing on his knees, it's a well done pose.
Great work, Tom! Isn't it amazing how much progress you can make on something in just 15 minutes a day?
Thanks, Carli, Gina & Jennifer. The screaming boy was the last sketch before I uploaded everything. And I put the most thought into him, probably because I had a specific expression in mind. Will have to make sure I have a better idea of the characters beforehand.
I also sketch very small, it seems to work better for me that way. Then I usually use a photocopier to enlarge the drawing. It's interesting how we all find our own way of feeling more comfortable when creating art. :-)
You are really doing great with your characters, always expressive. I like the boy playing with his toy bus, his body posture is perfect.

Hi Tom...these are great and cool that you added a tomatoe...I was just thinking about all the great tomatoes that will be in my vegetable garden this summer...can't wait...and the faces are awesome...I especially like the guy that is in awe...scared...hehehe

Looking good Tom! I always seem to work on a smaller scale myself, and try to fit the whole big picture on the page. You should give yourself a challenge and do a super close up! (Hmmm, I see a challenge brewing for me tomorrow!) Just to mix it up for fun. Great work!

It's so much fun to watch your drawings evolve. They're looking really good!
I know what you mean about the size at which you sketch. It was cool to see yours and Alicia's discussion, because I am always struggling to find the right size to work in as well. If it's too small, I lose the ability to be detailed and the line is less elegant, but if I go too large, I get overwhelmed. I suppose that's just one more reason why this exercise is so valuable, you will be finding what works best for you, since every artist is different in that regard.
BTW, I just knew you would be the one to notice the sunflower in the vase (on my post). You are really good at catching details. Must be the Art Director in you!
