Dragon and boy painting FINAL
Here is the final version of the dragon and boy painting I have been working over the past weeks. Except for the initial drawing of the boy, which I did in pencil and scanned in, everything was done in Photoshop. I am really happy with the way it turned out. It was a great learning experience, both in using my Bamboo tablet, and drawing and painting entirely in Photoshop. Don't know how much a of a portfolio piece it would make, but I will most likely use it as part of my blog header.

A NEW CHALLENGE...
Drawing people is my weakest skill when it comes to illustration, so I am going to challenge myself to draw at least one person per day—children and adults—in an effort to better my skills, and explore more actions and expressions. My goal is to try and loosen myself up some so my characters don't look so stiff. No time limit on this... I am going to continue until I am happy with the results. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

It looks great Tom!!!!!! Love how it turned out! Yes, I think you could use it on your portfolio for sure! Your first portfolio piece.. that is the hardest. Now you have to start planning for the second one! :o)
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Alicia! Hopefully I'll have something together by the first of the new year.
This would make a super header for your blog. People are certainly the hardest thing to draw because we all see them so often, I'm always trying to improve in this are - what has helped most is getting a feel for the correct proportions (and they are never what I initially think!) also attending a couple of life drawing classes was helpful. There is a YouTube 10 min tutorial on drawing faces which is excellent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1618qH7KojU&feature=related) or search for 'Sketching a Face- Basic Proportions' (the video is by Sycra)
This is great! AND what an exciting challenge you've set yourself, I shall certainly look forward to meeting your new creations!
wonderful work Tom...the finished piece is amazing...love the cute dragon and the sweet boy...
have a great weekend!
This turned out really nicely Tom.
I am thinking, though, that the dragon's right leg should be more forward so he is angled toward the boy. If you look at the plane he is on, he is actually situated a little back further behind the boy, so I think he needs to be angled a little more so we see that rear leg a bit more.
I like the color of dragon, such unique artwork!
Tom, this is great! you keep drawing, pal!
Thanks Diana, Kate, and May. And thanks for the tip Kate! :)
Great stuff Tom!
Thanks, Juan!
I LOVE the dragon! His intense look, yet gently demeanor and the detail of his wings. The boy is so sweet and adorable. I also like to cool calm palette you chose. Great work!
Thanks, Edrian!
