Protect thy art

Was just over at the Drawn blog, and their latest article is on a new illustration book that is out and is apparently full of stolen art and articles. You can read more here.

I would recommend watermarking your images in someway if you don't already, and please don't post anything larger than 800 pixels at 72dpi. That is plenty big. I am often surprised to see artists posting very large copies of their art online.

While these types of things are rare, it's not to say it couldn't happen to any artist. And it will most likely get worse as time goes on.

Is the watermarking on art a software you download as l have seen it but don't know how its done.

Jill,

You can do it in Photoshop, or most other image editing programs by adding a type layer.

Google "Adding a watermark to your image". Should give you some references to use!

Oh wow, this is not good Tom. Amazing things like this happen. I don't watermark my art online. I do however try to keep it around 600 px. I hope that is enough though.

Yeah, I really don't want to watermark across my artwork; kinda ruins the image when you have to try and look beyond the screened text! Perhaps something in the corner. However, I honestly don't thin this would happen though an artist's blog. They pulled all that from one website. And honestly, although much of it is good stuff, I don't think there is a huge demand for a $100 book of random children's art. But something to think about!

Hi Tom- I was going to post about this tomorrow, too. Good to spread the word-- at least it might stop someone who doesn't know any better!

Yep. Every little bit helps!
